This crochet pattern is for one 3D granny square with a 3D butterfly in the center.
You can make as many squares as you wish to make up your blanket. The joy and the choice is yours. Simple add them together with a simple stitch. You can add them as you go, using the optional scalloped edge of each block.
How many squares do I need for a typical baby blanket? It depends. I’d go for 4×4, 4×5 or 5×5 blocks. See my comments below on typical baby blanket sizes.
Finished Block Size
Each block is 6×6 inches or (15×15 cm).
How many blocks will you need? That depends on what size blanket you wish to make.
A baby blanket for the stroller is typically: 30 x 35 inches.
A receiving blanket is 40×40 inches.
A toddler blanket is 42 x 52 inches.
So, take your pick.
I used mercerized cotton yarn for this project.
To make 1 block, you’ll need 4 skeins of yarn (50g each) in 3 in complementary / contrasting colors, plus 1 in either white or black yarn. White makes all the colors pop. In most cases, it’s a better choice than black. So, I recommend staying with white.
How much yarn do I need? – you may wonder. The answer to that depends on your yarn choice and how many squares you choose to make.
Butterfly Granny Square Crochet Pattern
This is an instantly downloadable pattern for a 3D block. A block can be used to decorate a bag, a pillow or be a toddler room wall hanging – all on its own.
If you are going to use this block to create a blanket, I suggest you add as many blocks as you need to make up the right size approximately, hand-sew/crochet them together, then circle around the blanket with each of the colors in dc. Finish with one of the darker color in your color scheme.
