Martin Luther King Day coming up again on Monday January 16.

To me, Martin Luther King Jr. stands for following your heart, your soul desire, your dream, your conviction and for courage doing so. Therefore, every year, I like to orchestrate a creative project in his honor. 

This dream quilt pattern featured today is a tribute to Martin Luther King who created peace and freedom for all people, no matter what color their skin. So, make it a colorful quilt, will ya?!

Quilting Pattern

Kim Diamond designed this peace symbol quilt pattern, that allows you to use up a thousand remnants of fabric, or perhaps splurge on a gorgeous quilting fabric set….

You will have to do a bit of math to figure out how much fabric you’ll need of each type of color, and perhaps it’s best if you design freely as you go along.  Filling the field with more and more peace symbols.

Tip: add a double layer of ruffles on the outside of the quilt in colors that make the entire quilt come together.

Quilting may sound kind of tame, however, with Alisa Burke, quilting changes tack and sails the winds of adventure! Look what she did….

Step-by-step Fabric Painting, Sewing & Quilting Instructions

1. Hand stamp & hand print your  own fabric. That is: make your own stamps with foam pieces glued onto a base, get some textile paint, dip in the stamps and go create a wicked pattern.  Start neat, and go wilder progressively.  Let the paint dry before you move to step 2.  (see illustration)

2. Cut 9-12 fabric of approximately similar sizes that when they would be stitched together would be the size of a pillow front. 

3. Sew them together, as one would with separate quilting pieces. Neatness not required.  Just make sure that the various patterns look good together next to one another.

4. Now, race your sewing machine over from left to right, making 24-40 approximately evenly spaced lines across the pillow front. (see illustration)

5. When done, race the sewing machine over the pillow front from top to bottom, about 40 times.     

6. Now done with the quilting, add a pillow back, fill the pillow, and close it, with zipper or button or with neat stitches, doesn’t matter.

Yes, I was lucky to spend quite a bit of time in the Anthropologie shop in Santa Monica, LA as well as several other stores.   Don’t be jealous ~  I’m sharing with you.

Each yo-yo is made and attached in a way that it looks like a flower.

What is lovely about yo-yo making, is

1. you get to use of any remnants you may have

2. you get to do it a bit at a time, and can create many ‘take-along’ craft projects out of it, so that you’re never bored no matter how long you’ll be waiting somewhere as you’ll always have something fun to do.

3. the yo-yo’s are of course the time-consuming part of this project. Because each flower has to be made individually, you could make this quilt together with someone else and share the work.

Amy Butler Fabric & Materials Needed

The finished size of this quilt is 64” x 74” including the 2” ruffles. However, you could adjust the pattern to make any size quilt you want.

-PLUS – Lots of scraps to make many different size yo-yo’s.

Check the list of fabric yardages below for an estimate of how many yo-yo’s you can cut from each size piece:
1/2 yard = two 8” & four 2” yo-yo’s
3/8 yard = three 6” & two 3” yo-yo’s
1/4 yard = five 4” yo-yo’s
1/8 yard = nine 2” yo-yo’s

The following amount of yo-yo’s were used in my “Bloom Quilt”:
18 – 8”; 54 – 6”; 48 – 4”; 48 – 3”; 64 – 2”; 40 – 1 1/2”.

Batting / Notions Needed

-2 large spools of coordinating all-purpose thread (I use my Soul Blossoms Threads from Rowan. It’s great for quilting.)

Sure, go ahead and purchase the gorgeous Amy Butler fabrics to make this quilt.  As well as this, I  always suggest you make your own unique version of any quilt or other pattern that we feature.  For example, you could equally make  this quilt in monochrome, with differently textured fabrics.   It would look equally stunning but calmer ~ unless you choose scarlet red.

I’m thinking of off-white, and other pastel colors for a romantic version of this quilt.

I just answered an online question, what’s a Fat Quarter, and thought I should respond to it on the blog instead, as you all might be interested also.

Fat Quarters are typically used for quilting and patchwork. They are bundles of fabric that are pre-cut to size.

‘What size?’ you might ask? And this is where it gets technical for my audience who measuring standards vary between yards, meters, feet and stones.

The fat quarter is a US term based on a yard of fabric.  Let me explain:

• A yard of fabric is cut 36” long.   Fabric width varies, but most cottons for quilting and patchwork are 42” – 44” wide.
• A normal quarter yard of fabric is 9” long, and 42-44” wide.
• Now, a fat quarter is the same 1/4 of a yard of fabric, but rather than being cut into one long strip of just 9”, it is cut more like a fat square, i.e. 18 x 21” or 18 x 22”.

And there’s your answer.

If you are a beginner in quilting or patchwork, just note that there are also smaller sized ‘nearly square’ fabrics sets for sale. Some of these are 8” x 22” other are 6.5 x  6.5” or even 5 x 5” squares

Over the years, I have build up some fabric collections. Let me share my best designers and types of fabrics. I have four:

1. AMY BUTLER

Her fabrics are gorgeous, be that by the yard, in fat quarters of by the square. Amy Butler fabrics are clearly my favorite.

Again, Kaufman also sells fabric by the yard. which is ideal so you can create a solid back to a quilted blanket top.

3. MODA

Again, Moda also has the most beautiful fabrics, in precut in fat quarters, such as this one:

or Moda by the yard, or precut in smaller squares.   Can’t go wrong with Moda material.

Some Name Your Link are on the romantic side of the design scale. Most Moda fabrics are contemporary. All are happy!

4. CRAFTY CUTS

Crafty Cuts have a range of brighter and bolder fabrics, and I love them, for their lower prices, as well as for some of their designs. Have a look at the fabrics from Crafty Cuts

And there you have it.  My four favorites. Of course, there’s plenty of solid colored fabric to be had and frankly, with so many busy and bold patterns around, I crave for some plain white at times, or bight blue, and make summer shoes…

Lazy romantic, that’s the look I’m after for the bedroom this Summer & Fall.  I’m sharing my inspiration file with you today, with finds from all over the world, from Anthropology in the US to Lazybones down under.

Anthropologie Bedding Inspiration

Click these images, so you can see the wonderful smocking  / ruffling going on in this quilt.

Large dahlias are interwoven with fluffy leaf patterns on an overall ruffled/smocked background. A work of art, isn’t it?

I colorized a section of this bedding in pink to see what effect that would give. I really like a dusty pink for this project, although I can see that a white quilt is going to be the ultimate winner.

Supplies Needed for Your Art –fully Smocked, Ruffled & Quilted Bedding

a,b,c:  Sewing Machine, Quilting Thread and Patience

The obvious. First choose, whether you are going to use Anthropologie or Lazybones as your inspiration. Second, make a plan, design and choose your measurements and create design ‘rules’: Create mock flowers in paper and lay them out over the fabric. Ensure a certain ‘uniformity’ of elements and repetition. See how many flowers / elements you’ll need.

d: Quilt Fabric

And loads of light-weight cotton. How much? Let’s figure it out and see the materials you’ll need to make a quilt.  Below are the standard US bedding sizes.  The ruffling makes you need at least 30% more width.  You have to multiply by 2 for front and back, although only 1 side has to be ruffled, the other side can be straight.  Plus add for all the flower embellishments.

If you want to add pillow cases, than use the below measurements and calculate, using the same formula.

This 58”-wide, white cotton voile (fabric by the yard) from Kaufmann would be perfect for this project: sheer & lightweight, 100% cotton and inexpensive!

e: Quilt Batting

This wide cotton quilt batting called ‘Quilters Dream’ is just what you need to make a quilt that’s good for Spring, Summer & early Fall.

Three Tutorials to Create Your Own Quilted Bedding

While I have no single tutorial to do the whole project, here are a couple of quilt sewing patterns whose design elements and methods will help you in the construction and design of your own romantic designer quilted bedding.

For the Anthropology – Style Ruffled Flower Quilt:

1. How to Make Ruffled Flowers for Quilt Bedding

We already featured this tutorial for a quilt with ruffled flowers.  Instead of ribbons, use strips of the same white, thin, frayed cotton fabric as for the body of your quilt.

 2. How to Make Smocked Strips for Quilt Bedding

This is a great tutorial for another kind of quilt ~ a great project in and by itself, made by Vintage Revivals.  I am featuring it here in particular because she so excellently explains how to do the smocking strips.

For the Lazybones – Style Rosette Quilt: 

3.  How to Make a Rosette Square

You essentially want to make this rosette pillow using the tutorial of ‘Make it Lovely’ many times over. And you will want to  use this batting filling instead of a pillow insert.

Once you have as many as you’ll need for a full, queen or kind size bed quilt, sew them together and toast with champagne, as I’m sure this won’t be a quick project…. but then again, all quilters know this… It’s a lifestyle.

Kojo Designs made this quilt as in the picture, in white. She sets out that you’ll need 18×18″ squares, roughly cut (she uses cotton jersey), and using a 6″ plate, draw a circle in the center of each square. With big stitches, trace that design with quilting thread and pull it, so that the center becomes like a whirling, puffy flower. Sew the squares together to finish.

Walking begin December in the late afternoon through the always romantic streets of Rome, as everything is so ancient and so laden with the energy of things that have endured the passage of time.  You know how handmade things have that feel about them, of extensive handling and care in the making… How it has irregular quirks and that is exactly why it is turning out so lovely, and special. Well, the streets of Rome are like that. They do not line up. The street numbers do not line up either, btw, which is not so practical, but yes, in deed that too adds to its charm.

And so in this place, I went window shopping for Christmas. Here is an overview of some of the lovely bags I found. Of course, I’m omitting some of the not-so-crafty classics, and including those who use recycled materials.

Italian Handbag for Christmas

1. In the Prada shop, this chic black hand-knit bag with same-colored flowers and gold metal elements for contrast to the soft flow of the bag. I don’t think this is a Prada bag, however given its price tag (1295 euro, or 1.3x that for dollars), it sure it in its league.

2.  In the ‘Recycled Art’ shop (forgot its name), spotted these gorgeous quilted tote bags.  They are large. And  no doubt, they are a lot of work to quilt together. Actually, these quilted bags remind me of origami… so let me dub them ‘origami bags’. Love these!

3. In a trendy fashion shop, I spotted this recycled aluminum crochet messenger bag made from the pull tags of soda pop cans.  This bag was made in several sizes, and I saw someone walk around with an over-sized messenger bag. Very cool. Looked light weight even though made with metal. And looked strong. I have no idea about pricing, so I scoured around on the web, and actually found a ‘similar’ soda pop-top messenger bag for sale for US$240…. Oh, and later I looked a bit further online and found a handmade clutchwhich crocheted the pop tops and which offers a similar look to the picture here, for only US$27! Wowl

4. On the Christmas craft market, I shopped and shopped and spotted loads of felt bag designs for you, all equally lovely. Italy loves felts and is very creative with it.  These kinds of bags are inexpensive. Say, 18 euro.

Bag designer J. Kimberling calls this her ‘Luscious Big Bow’ bag.  It’s a bit quilted in that it uses a number of different but compatible fabrics, but not so much that it will put off a non-quilter.

The bag was originally designed to promote the lovely fabrics. Then Kimberling offered the design of the bag free. Thank you Kimberling! I like both the big bow, the slight tapering at the top of the bag and the overall simplicity of the design.

This bag is indeed very festive. Summery, but yet, if you pick the right color scheme for your fabrics, you can easily wear it into Fall.

A beautiful Back to School project!  This girl backpack is quilted, has ribbons & buttons, has contrast front cover, is covered with flowers ~ in one word: is cutter than a button. I love this sweet quilted backpack and just know that thousands of young girls would love their mom to make this for them.  (And can imagine moms making 4 of these simultaneously as they want one for them selves, one for their best friends and then have some to give a way as presents later on in the year…)

This backpack seems a bit sturdier than the usual one with just a drawstring thanks to both the quilting and its construction.
