<p>Martin Luther King Day coming up again on Monday January 16. </p>
<p>To me, Martin Luther King Jr. stands for following your heart, your soul desire, your dream, your conviction and for courage doing so. Therefore, every year, I like to orchestrate a creative project in his honor.&#160; </p>
<p>This dream quilt pattern featured today is a tribute to Martin Luther King who created peace and freedom for all people, no matter what color their skin. So, make it a colorful quilt, will ya?!</p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<h3>Quilting Pattern</h3>
<p><a href="http://www.finecraftguild.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/peace_quilt_scale_aid.gif"><img title="peace_quilt_scale_aid" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: inline; border-left-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px" height="206" alt="peace_quilt_scale_aid" src="http://www.finecraftguild.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/peace_quilt_scale_aid_thumb.gif" width="244" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://www.finecraftguild.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/peace_quilt_pattern.gif"><img title="peace_quilt_pattern" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: inline; border-left-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px" height="204" alt="peace_quilt_pattern" src="http://www.finecraftguild.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/peace_quilt_pattern_thumb.gif" width="244" border="0" /></a> </p>
<p>(click left image for true-scale design, and to start fabric measurements.)</p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<p>Kim Diamond designed this peace symbol quilt pattern, that allows you to use up a thousand remnants of fabric, or perhaps splurge on a gorgeous quilting fabric set….</p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<p>You will have to do a bit of math to figure out how much fabric you’ll need of each type of color, and perhaps it’s best if you design freely as you go along.&#160; Filling the field with more and more peace symbols. </p>
<p>Tip: add a double layer of ruffles on the outside of the quilt in colors that make the entire quilt come together.</p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<blockquote><p>&quot;I say to you today, my friends, that in spite of the difficulties and frustrations of the moment, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: &#8216;We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal.&#8217; I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at a table of brotherhood&#8230;&quot; ~ Martin Luther King Jr.</p>
</blockquote>
<p>&#160;</p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<h3>More Creative Ideas</h3>

<li><a href="http://www.finecraftguild.com/category/textile-art/quilting/" target="_blank">Quilting Projects / Patterns</a> (from simple ideas to full blown detailed quilting patterns)</li>
</ul>
<p>
<strong>Tip:</strong> this pattern can also be used for a rug, albeit that I would enlarge the design so it&#8217;s less work and more durable.

<p><i>: a unique quilting pattern</i>. </p>
<p>Quilting may sound kind of tame, however, with Alisa Burke, quilting changes tack and sails the winds of adventure! Look what she did….</p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<h3><a href="http://www.finecraftguild.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/quilted_pillow.jpg"><img title="quilted_pillow" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: inline; border-left-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin: 45px; border-right-width: 0px" height="618" alt="quilted pillow" src="http://www.finecraftguild.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/quilted_pillow_thumb.jpg" width="504" align="right" border="0" /></a></h3>
<p>  <br clear="all" />
<p>&#160;</p>
<h3>Step-by-step Fabric Painting, Sewing &amp; Quilting Instructions <a href="http://www.finecraftguild.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/fabric_paint_alisa_burke.jpg"><img title="fabric paint alisa burke" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: inline; border-left-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin: 0px 45px 45px; border-right-width: 0px" height="244" alt="fabric paint alisa burke" src="http://www.finecraftguild.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/fabric_paint_alisa_burke_thumb.jpg" width="164" align="right" border="0" /></a></h3>
<p>&#160;</p>
<p>1. Hand stamp &amp; hand print your&#160; own fabric. That is: make your own stamps with foam pieces glued onto a base, get some textile paint, dip in the stamps and go create a wicked pattern.&#160; Start neat, and go wilder progressively.&#160; Let the paint dry before you move to step 2.&#160; (see illustration)</p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<p>2. Cut 9-12 fabric of approximately similar sizes that when they would be stitched together would be the size of a pillow front.&#160; </p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<p>3. Sew them together, as one would with separate quilting pieces. Neatness not required.&#160; Just make sure that the various patterns look good together next to one another.</p>
<p>  <br clear="all" />
<p><a href="http://www.finecraftguild.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/quilt_across_pillow.jpg"><img title="quilt_across_pillow" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: inline; border-left-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin: 9px 34px 34px; border-right-width: 0px" height="373" alt="quilt_across_pillow" src="http://www.finecraftguild.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/quilt_across_pillow_thumb.jpg" width="250" align="left" border="0" /></a>4. Now, race your sewing machine over from left to right, making 24-40 approximately evenly spaced lines across the pillow front. (see illustration)</p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<p>5. When done, race the sewing machine over the pillow front from top to bottom, about 40 times.&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160; </p>
<p>&#160; </p>
<p>6. Now done with the quilting, add a pillow back, fill the pillow, and close it, with zipper or button or with neat stitches, doesn’t matter.</p>
<p>&#160;</p>

<p>In case the name <strong>Alisa Burke</strong> sound vaguely familiar, let me share: </p>

<p>Yes, I was lucky to spend quite a bit of time in the Anthropologie shop in Santa Monica, LA as well as several other stores. &#160; Don’t be jealous ~&#160; I’m sharing with you.</p>
<p>And be ready to get inspired: bring the embroidery floss out together with your stash of retro vintage fabrics. We have some serious creative kitchen sewing to do…. </p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<p>But first, before I delve into this Anthro experience, let me explain …</p>

<p>… what just happened ??!!</p>
<p>Regular readers will have missed us, while passerby’s may have noticed our nearly 1 month hiatus in November. What I did was … soul-searching homework while traveling to California, US and Vancouver, Canada. </p>
<p>The verdict: we are not going to leave you, reader, alone again. Not for a day.&#160; Instead, we will plan, days of the week, monthly schedule in place.&#160; </p>
<p>Time to grow and grow-up.&#160; We’re now a top contemporary &amp; eco-green craft, fashion &amp; home decorating site with several &#8217;000s of daily readers, and several million page views. </p>
<p>Part of the new plan is to change our posting format to suit iPhones.&#160; In 2012, you’ll get to download our new app for this purpose: cool, green craft of the day.&#160; Languages: coming up. ……. </p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<p>In the meanwhile, I made tons of pictures, just like I did for my Paris trip in July, and I’ll be sharing them with you through out December and January, one topic at a time.</p>

<p>Today’s topic is: kitchenware at Anthropologie.</p>

<p>Know how to make a yo-yo? Good. Let’s go crazy making yo-yo’s and create a fabulously &amp; frivolously fun quilt with them.&#160; Here’s your free pattern. </p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<h3>Yo-yo Quilt Pattern</h3>
<p>This Amy Butler quilt pattern uses the happy &amp; cheery Amy Butler fabrics. </p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<h3>The Amy Butler Quilt</h3>
<p>&#160; <a href="http://www.finecraftguild.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/flower_quilt_pattern.jpg"><img title="flower_quilt_pattern" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: inline; border-left-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px" height="477" alt="flower_quilt_pattern" src="http://www.finecraftguild.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/flower_quilt_pattern_thumb.jpg" width="549" border="0" /></a> </p>
<p>Just looking at this quilt makes me happy. </p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<h3>Fun Quilt Detailing</h3>
<p><a href="http://www.finecraftguild.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/yoyo_quilt_pattern.jpg"><img title="yoyo_quilt_pattern" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: inline; border-left-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px" height="504" alt="yoyo_quilt_pattern" src="http://www.finecraftguild.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/yoyo_quilt_pattern_thumb.jpg" width="467" border="0" /></a> </p>
<ul>
<li>See how the yo-yo’s are patterned onto the quilt. </li>
<li>Notice romantic other details so as this ruffle all around the quilt. </li>
<li>The fresh green &amp; white background of the quilt makes the colorful flowers pop. </li>
</ul>
<p>&#160;</p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<h3>Yo-yo Close-Up</h3>
<p><a href="http://www.finecraftguild.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/amybutlerquilt.jpg"><img title="amybutlerquilt" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: inline; border-left-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px" height="482" alt="amybutlerquilt" src="http://www.finecraftguild.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/amybutlerquilt_thumb.jpg" width="511" border="0" /></a></p>
<p>Each yo-yo is made and attached in a way that it looks like a flower. </p>
<p>What is lovely about yo-yo making, is </p>
<p>1. you get to use of any remnants you may have</p>
<p>2. you get to do it a bit at a time, and can create many ‘take-along’ craft projects out of it, so that you’re never bored no matter how long you’ll be waiting somewhere as you’ll always have something fun to do.</p>
<p>3. the yo-yo’s are of course the time-consuming part of this project. Because each flower has to be made individually, you could make this quilt together with someone else and share the work.</p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<h3>Amy Butler Fabric &amp; Materials Needed</h3>
<p>The finished size of this quilt is 64” x 74” including the 2” ruffles. However, you could adjust the pattern to make any size quilt you want.</p>

<h3>Fabric Needed</h3>
<p>-4 yards of 54” wide mid-weight Home Dec print for the Quilt <br />Back</p>
<p>From 44” wide quilting fabric: <br />-1 yard of 4 coordinating prints for the Quilt Top <br />-1 1/8 yards of a coordinating print for the Ruffle.</p>
<p>-PLUS &#8211; Lots of scraps to make many different size yo-yo’s. </p>
<p>Check the list of fabric yardages below for an estimate of how many yo-yo’s you can cut from each size piece:    <br />1/2 yard = two 8” &amp; four 2” yo-yo’s     <br />3/8 yard = three 6” &amp; two 3” yo-yo’s     <br />1/4 yard = five 4” yo-yo’s     <br />1/8 yard = nine 2” yo-yo’s</p>
<p>The following amount of yo-yo’s were used in my “Bloom Quilt”:     <br />18 – 8”; 54 – 6”; 48 – 4”; 48 – 3”; 64 – 2”; 40 – 1 1/2”.    </p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<h3>Batting / Notions Needed </h3>
<p>
<p>-1 pkg of twin size cotton batting (Cotton Classic batting from Fairfield is used in the pattern, but consider this batting:&#160; <a title="http://www.finecraftguild.com/insul-bright/" href="http://www.finecraftguild.com/insul-bright/">http://www.finecraftguild.com/insul-bright/</a></p>
<p>-2 large spools of coordinating all-purpose thread (I use my Soul Blossoms Threads from Rowan. It’s great for quilting.)</p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<h3>Quilting Patterns </h3>

<em>THE SMALL PRINT: How to subscribe: 1. add details to form top right of this page. In the email you&#8217;ll receive, confirm you are you. 2. Wait 2 minutes up to 4 hrs till your mail servers are caught up. 99.99% sure you will have received the pattern automatically. Tip 2: be kind to me when you feel you must write me, and don&#8217;t write to me before you look in your own junk mail folder etc. This pattern is just one of the many goodies you&#8217;ll receive when signing up for the daily newsletter. <strong>Lots of free patterns and ideas ~ well worth it</strong>!</em></p>
<p>Sure, go ahead and purchase the gorgeous Amy Butler fabrics to make this quilt.&#160; As well as this, I&#160; always suggest you make your own unique version of any quilt or other pattern that we feature.&#160; For example, you could equally make&#160; this quilt in monochrome, with differently textured fabrics.&#160;&#160; It would look equally stunning but calmer ~ unless you choose scarlet red. </p>
<p><img style="display: inline; margin: 0px 45px 45px" height="160" src="http://www.finecraftguild.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Pink_smocked_Quilt_lazybones.jpg" width="240" align="right" /> I’m thinking of off-white, and other pastel colors for a romantic version of this quilt.</p>
<p>Have a look at this pale pink pastel monochrome but textured Anthropologie quilt, and you’ll know what I mean: <a title="http://www.finecraftguild.com/bedding-ruffled-smocked-quilt-patterns/" href="http://www.finecraftguild.com/bedding-ruffled-smocked-quilt-patterns/">quilt-pattern</a>. </div>
<p>I just answered an online question, what’s a Fat Quarter, and thought I should respond to it on the blog instead, as you all might be interested also.</p>
<p>Fat Quarters are typically used for quilting and patchwork. They are bundles of fabric that are pre-cut to size. </p>
<p><strong><em>‘What size?’</em></strong> you might ask? And this is where it gets technical for my audience who measuring standards vary between yards, meters, feet and stones. </p>
<p>The fat quarter is a US term based on a yard of fabric.&#160; Let me explain:</p>
<ul>
<li>A yard of fabric is cut 36” long.&#160;&#160; Fabric width varies, but most cottons for quilting and patchwork are 42” – 44” wide. </li>
<li>A normal quarter yard of fabric is 9” long, and 42-44” wide. </li>
<li>Now, a fat quarter is the same 1/4 of a yard of fabric, but rather than being cut into one long strip of just 9”, it is cut more like a fat square, i.e. 18 x 21” or 18 x 22”. </li>
</ul>
<p>And there’s your answer.</p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<p>If you are a beginner in quilting or patchwork, just note that there are also smaller sized ‘nearly square’ fabrics sets for sale. Some of these are 8” x 22” other are 6.5 x&#160; 6.5” or even 5 x 5” squares</p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<p>Over the years, I have build up some fabric collections. Let me share my best designers and types of fabrics. I have four:</p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<h3><strong>1. AMY BUTLER</strong> </h3>
<p>Her fabrics are gorgeous, be that by the yard, in fat quarters of by the square. Amy Butler fabrics are clearly my favorite.</p>

<p>Here&#8217;s a sample of her fat quarters fabric collection (click on image to learn more). </p>

<p>Besides beautiful fabrics for grown-ups, Kaufman also has fun fabrics for kids: cupcakes, Dr. Seuss and tons more themed fabric collections. </p>
<p>Again, Kaufman also sells <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&amp;location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fs%3Fie%3DUTF8%26x%3D0%26ref_%3Dnb_sb_noss%26y%3D0%26field-keywords%3Dkaufman%2520fat%2520quarters%26url%3Dsearch-alias%253Daps%23%3Furl%3Dsearch-alias%3Daps&amp;tag=wwwwebcommerceor&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957">fabric by the yard.</a> which is ideal so you can create a solid back to a quilted blanket top. </p>

<br />
<a target="_blank" href="http://www.amazon.com/mn/search?_encoding=UTF8&#038;x=0&#038;tag=wwwwebcommerceor&#038;ie=UTF8&#038;linkCode=ur2&#038;y=0&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=390957&#038;field-keywords=moda%20fat%20quarters&#038;url=search-alias%3Daps%23"><br />
<img src="http://www.finecraftguild.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/moda_fat_quarters.jpg"><br />Moda Fat Quarters</a><img src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=wwwwebcommerceor&#038;l=ur2&#038;o=1" width="1" height="1" border="0" alt="" style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" /></p>
<p>or <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&amp;location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fs%3Fie%3DUTF8%26x%3D0%26ref_%3Dnb_sb_noss%26y%3D0%26field-keywords%3Dmoda%26url%3Dsearch-alias%253Darts-crafts%23&amp;tag=wwwwebcommerceor&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957"><strong>Moda by the yard,</strong> or precut in smaller squares</a><img style="margin: 0px; border-top-style: none! important; border-right-style: none! important; border-left-style: none! important; border-bottom-style: none! important" height="1" alt="" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=wwwwebcommerceor&amp;l=ur2&amp;o=1" width="1" border="0" />.&#160;&#160; Can’t go wrong with Moda material.
<p>&#160;</p>
<p>Some <a target="_blank" href="http://www.amazon.com/mn/search/?_encoding=UTF8&#038;x=0&#038;tag=wwwwebcommerceor&#038;linkCode=ur2&#038;y=0&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=390957&#038;field-keywords=moda%20fat%20quARTERS&#038;url=search-alias%3Daps">Name Your Link</a><img src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=wwwwebcommerceor&#038;l=ur2&#038;o=1" width="1" height="1" border="0" alt="" style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" /> are on the romantic side of the design scale. Most Moda fabrics are contemporary. All are happy! </p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<h3><strong>4. CRAFTY CUTS</strong></h3>
<p> <img style="display: inline; margin: 6px 34px" src="http://ws.assoc-amazon.com/widgets/q?_encoding=UTF8&amp;Format=_SL160_&amp;ASIN=B004FEEXJ6&amp;MarketPlace=US&amp;ID=AsinImage&amp;WS=1&amp;tag=wwwwebcommerceor&amp;ServiceVersion=20070822" align="left" border="0" /><img style="margin: 0px; border-top-style: none! important; border-right-style: none! important; border-left-style: none! important; border-bottom-style: none! important" height="1" alt="" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B004FEEXJ6&amp;camp=217145&amp;creative=399373" width="1" border="0" /><strong>Crafty Cuts</strong> have a range of brighter and bolder fabrics, and I love them, for their lower prices, as well as for some of their designs. Have a look at the fabrics from <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&#038;location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fs%3Fie%3DUTF8%26x%3D0%26ref_%3Dnb_sb_noss%26y%3D0%26field-keywords%3Dcrafty%2520cuts%26url%3Dsearch-alias%253Daps%23&#038;tag=wwwwebcommerceor&#038;linkCode=ur2&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=390957">Crafty Cuts</a><img src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=wwwwebcommerceor&#038;l=ur2&#038;o=1" width="1" height="1" border="0" alt="" style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" /></p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<p>And there you have it.&#160; My four favorites. Of course, there’s plenty of solid colored fabric to be had and frankly, with so many busy and bold patterns around, I crave for some plain white at times, or bight blue, and make summer shoes…</p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<p>&#160;</p>

<h3>Anthropologie Bedding Inspiration<a href="http://www.finecraftguild.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/bedding_anthropologie.jpg"><img title="bedding anthropologie" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: inline; border-left-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin: 34px 48px; border-right-width: 0px" height="244" alt="bedding anthropologie" src="http://www.finecraftguild.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/bedding_anthropologie_thumb.jpg" width="164" align="right" border="0" /></a></h3>
<p><a href="http://www.finecraftguild.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Anthropologie_bedding_quilt.jpg"><img title="Anthropologie bedding quilt" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: inline; border-left-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin: 0px 9px; border-right-width: 0px" height="484" alt="Anthropologie bedding quilt" src="http://www.finecraftguild.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Anthropologie_bedding_quilt_thumb.jpg" width="324" align="left" border="0" /></a> </p>
<p>Click these images, so you can see the wonderful smocking&#160; / ruffling going on in this quilt. </p>
<p>Large dahlias are interwoven with fluffy leaf patterns on an overall ruffled/smocked background. A work of art, isn’t it?&#160; </p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<p align="right">Here’s the bedding quilt as it will look on a bed. </p>

<h3>Anthropologie Bedding Close-up</h3>
<p>I colorized a section of this bedding in pink to see what effect that would give. I really like a dusty pink for this project, although I can see that a white quilt is going to be the ultimate winner.&#160; </p>
<p>This close-up of the design clearly shows two types of flowers used. </p>

<p>Gorgeous pink rosettes, quilted together to whatever size bedding you wish. </p>
<p>Sweet dreams… <a href="http://www.finecraftguild.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/bedding_lazybones.jpg"><img title="bedding_lazybones" style="border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; margin-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px" height="544" alt="bedding_lazybones" src="http://www.finecraftguild.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/bedding_lazybones_thumb.jpg" width="354" border="0" /></a></p>

<p>Also perfect for an outdoor daybed.</p>

<h3>Supplies Needed for Your Art –fully Smocked, Ruffled &amp; Quilted Bedding</h3>
<p>&#160;</p>
<h3>a,b,c:&#160; Sewing Machine, Quilting Thread and Patience</h3>
<p>The obvious. First choose, whether you are going to use Anthropologie or Lazybones as your inspiration. Second, make a plan, design and choose your measurements and create design ‘rules’: Create mock flowers in paper and lay them out over the fabric. Ensure a certain ‘uniformity’ of elements and repetition. See how many flowers / elements you’ll need. </p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<h3>d: Quilt Fabric</h3>
<table cellspacing="4" cellpadding="9" width="400" align="right" border="0">
<tbody>
<tr align="center">
<td valign="top" width="400"><strong>Standard Bedding Size</strong>           </p>
<p><a href="http://www.finecraftguild.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/bedding_measurement.jpg"><img title="bedding_measurement" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: inline; border-left-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px" height="107" alt="bedding_measurement" src="http://www.finecraftguild.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/bedding_measurement_thumb.jpg" width="244" border="0" /></a>           </p>
<p>&#160;<a href="http://www.finecraftguild.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/bedding_pillowcases_measurement.jpg"><img title="bedding_pillowcases_,measurement" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: inline; border-left-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px" height="74" alt="bedding_pillowcases_,measurement" src="http://www.finecraftguild.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/bedding_pillowcases_measurement_thumb.jpg" width="231" border="0" /></a>&#160;</td>
</tr>
</tbody>
</table>
<p>And loads of light-weight cotton. How much? Let’s figure it out and see the materials you’ll need to make a quilt.&#160; Below are the standard US bedding sizes.&#160; The ruffling makes you need at least 30% more width.&#160; You have to multiply by 2 for front and back, although only 1 side has to be ruffled, the other side can be straight.&#160; Plus add for all the flower embellishments.</p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<p>If you want to add pillow cases, than use the below measurements and calculate, using the same formula.</p>
<p>This <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0046VHT4E/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=wwwwebcommerceor&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=217145&amp;creative=399349&amp;creativeASIN=B0046VHT4E"><strong>58&#8221;-wide, white cotton voile</strong> (fabric by the yard)</a><img style="margin: 0px; border-top-style: none! important; border-right-style: none! important; border-left-style: none! important; border-bottom-style: none! important" height="1" alt="" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B0046VHT4E&amp;camp=217145&amp;creative=399349" width="1" border="0" /> from Kaufmann would be <strong>perfect</strong> for this project: sheer &amp; lightweight, 100% cotton and inexpensive! </p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<h3>e: Quilt Batting</h3>
<p>This <strong><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003F7AYJM/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=wwwwebcommerceor&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=217145&amp;creative=399349&amp;creativeASIN=B003F7AYJM">wide cotton quilt batting called &#8216;Quilters Dream&#8217;</a><img style="margin: 0px; border-top-style: none! important; border-right-style: none! important; border-left-style: none! important; border-bottom-style: none! important" height="1" alt="" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B003F7AYJM&amp;camp=217145&amp;creative=399349" width="1" border="0" /></strong> is just what you need to make a quilt that’s good for Spring, Summer &amp; early Fall. </p>

<p>This is a <strong>great </strong><a href="http://vintagerevivals.blogspot.com/2010/11/sewing-room-scraps-bedding.htm" target="_blank"><strong>tutorial</strong></a> for another kind of quilt ~ a great project in and by itself, made by Vintage Revivals.&#160; I am featuring it here in particular because she so excellently explains how to do the smocking strips.</p>

<p>&#160;</p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<p><strong>For the Lazybones – Style Rosette Quilt:&#160; </strong></p>
<h3>3.&#160; How to Make a Rosette Square</h3>
<p>You essentially want to make <a href="http://www.makeitlovely.com/2010/06/gather-your-roses-pillow-tutorial.html">this rosette pillow </a>using the tutorial of ‘Make it Lovely’ many times over. And you will want to&#160; use <strong><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003F7AYJM/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=wwwwebcommerceor&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=217145&amp;creative=399349&amp;creativeASIN=B003F7AYJM">this batting filling </a><img style="margin: 0px; border-top-style: none! important; border-right-style: none! important; border-left-style: none! important; border-bottom-style: none! important" height="1" alt="" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B003F7AYJM&amp;camp=217145&amp;creative=399349" width="1" border="0" /></strong>instead of a pillow insert.</p>
</p>
<p>Once you have as many as you’ll need for a full, queen or kind size bed quilt, sew them together and toast with champagne, as I&#8217;m sure this won&#8217;t be a quick project&#8230;. but then again, all quilters know this&#8230; It&#8217;s a lifestyle.</p>
<p><a href="http://kojodesigns.blogspot.com/2010/12/kojotutorial-anthropologie-inspired.html">Kojo Designs</a> made this quilt as in the picture, in white. She sets out that you&#8217;ll need 18&#215;18&#8243; squares, roughly cut (she uses cotton jersey), and using a 6&#8243; plate, draw a circle in the center of each square. With big stitches, trace that design with quilting thread and pull it, so that the center becomes like a whirling, puffy flower. Sew the squares together to finish. </p>

<p>Walking begin December in the late afternoon through the always romantic streets of Rome, as everything is so ancient and so laden with the energy of things that have endured the passage of time.&#160; You know how handmade things have that feel about them, of extensive handling and care in the making… How it has irregular quirks and that is exactly why it is turning out so lovely, and special. Well, the streets of Rome are like that. They do not line up. The street numbers do not line up either, btw, which is not so practical, but yes, in deed that too adds to its charm.</p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<p><a href="http://www.finecraftguild.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/christmas_rome.jpg"><img title="Christmas in Italy" style="border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; margin: 25px; border-left: 0px; border-bottom: 0px" alt="Christmas in Italy" src="http://www.finecraftguild.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/christmas_rome.jpg" align="right" border="0" /></a></p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<p>And so in this place, I went window shopping for Christmas. Here is an overview of some of the lovely bags I found. Of course, I’m omitting some of the not-so-crafty classics, and including those who use recycled materials.</p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<h3>Italian Handbag for Christmas</h3>
<p><a href="http://www.finecraftguild.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/knitbag_romeWinter20101200e.jpg"><img title="knit bag rome Winter" style="border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; margin: 0px 25px; border-left: 0px; border-bottom: 0px" height="195" alt="knit bag Italy Winter " src="http://www.finecraftguild.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/knitbag_romeWinter20101200e_thumb.jpg" width="244" align="left" border="0" /></a>1. In the Prada shop, this chic black hand-knit bag with same-colored flowers and gold metal elements for contrast to the soft flow of the bag. I don’t think this is a Prada bag, however given its price tag (1295 euro, or 1.3x that for dollars), it sure it in its league.</p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<p><a href="http://www.finecraftguild.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/quiltedbag_recycled.jpg"><img title="quilted bag recycled" style="border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; margin: 25px; border-left: 0px; border-bottom: 0px" height="214" alt="quilted bag  recycled" src="http://www.finecraftguild.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/quiltedbag_recycled_thumb.jpg" width="244" align="right" border="0" /></a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.finecraftguild.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/quiltedbag_recycled.jpg"></a></p>
<p>2.&#160; In the ‘Recycled Art’ shop (forgot its name), spotted these gorgeous quilted tote bags.&#160; They are large. And&#160; no doubt, they are a lot of work to quilt together. Actually, these quilted bags remind me of origami… so let me dub them ‘origami bags’. Love these! </p>
<p>&#160; </p>
<p><a href="http://www.finecraftguild.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/quiltedbag_recycled.jpg"></a></p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<p><a href="http://www.finecraftguild.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/quiltedbag_recycled.jpg"><br />
</a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.finecraftguild.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/recycledaluminiumbag.jpg"><img title="recycled aluminum crochet bag" style="border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; margin: 0px 25px; border-left: 0px; border-bottom: 0px" height="244" alt="recycled aluminum crochet bag" src="http://www.finecraftguild.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/recycledaluminiumbag_thumb.jpg" width="199" align="left" border="0" /></a>3. In a trendy fashion shop, I spotted this recycled aluminum crochet messenger bag made from the pull tags of soda pop cans.&#160; This bag was made in several sizes, and I saw someone walk around with an over-sized messenger bag. Very cool. Looked light weight even though made with metal. And looked strong. I have no idea about pricing, so I scoured around on the web, and actually found a <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000F6LFAS?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=wwwwebcommerceor&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B000F6LFAS"> ‘similar’ soda pop-top messenger bag</a><img src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=wwwwebcommerceor&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B000F6LFAS" width="1" height="1" border="0" alt="" style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" /> for sale for US$240&#8230;. Oh, and later I looked a bit further online and found a <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002BWX11K?ie=UTF8&#038;tag=wwwwebcommerceor&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=390957&#038;creativeASIN=B002BWX11K">handmade clutch</a><img src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=wwwwebcommerceor&#038;l=as2&#038;o=1&#038;a=B002BWX11K" width="1" height="1" border="0" alt="" style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" />which crocheted the pop tops and which offers a similar look to the picture here, for only US$27! Wowl</p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<p><a href="http://www.finecraftguild.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/feltbag_italy.jpg"><img title="felt bag italy" style="border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; margin: 0px 25px; border-left: 0px; border-bottom: 0px" height="244" alt="handmade bag Italy" src="http://www.finecraftguild.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/feltbag_italy_thumb.jpg" width="229" align="right" border="0" /></a></p>
<p>4. On the Christmas craft market, I shopped and shopped and spotted loads of felt bag designs for you, all equally lovely. Italy loves felts and is very creative with it.&#160; These kinds of bags are inexpensive. Say, 18 euro.</p>

<p>Bag designer J. Kimberling calls this her ‘Luscious Big Bow’ bag.&#160; It’s a bit quilted in that it uses a number of different but compatible fabrics, but not so much that it will put off a non-quilter.</p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<p>The bag was originally designed to promote the lovely fabrics. Then Kimberling offered the design of the bag free. Thank you Kimberling! I like both the big bow, the slight tapering at the top of the bag and the overall simplicity of the design. <a href="http://www.finecraftguild.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/bigbowbag.jpg"><img title="big bow free bag pattern" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: inline; border-left-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin: 25px; border-right-width: 0px" height="407" alt="big bow free bag pattern" src="http://www.finecraftguild.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/bigbowbag_thumb.jpg" width="274" align="right" border="0" /></a></p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<p>This bag is indeed very festive. Summery, but yet, if you pick the right color scheme for your fabrics, you can easily wear it into Fall.</p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<p>Have a look at the bag, closed up. Lovely, right?!</p>
<p><a href="http://www.finecraftguild.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/bigbowbag1.jpg"><img title="bigbowbag1" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: inline; border-left-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin: 25px; border-right-width: 0px" height="404" alt="bigbowbag1" src="http://www.finecraftguild.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/bigbowbag1_thumb.jpg" width="272" align="left" border="0" /></a>&#160; </p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<p><strong>designer: J. Kimberling</strong></p>
<p><strong></strong></p>
<p><strong>Bag Pattern Illustration</strong></p>
<p>In this illustration you get an overview of the repetition of the various fabrics.&#160; </p>
<p>There are 5 different prints used in this bag. Great way of using up your stash of bits and pieces…&#160; Have a look what you have already, and then order some lovely compatible fabrics online.&#160; </p>
<p><strong></strong></p>
<p><strong></strong></p>

<p><strong>Choosing the Right Fabric</strong></p>
<p>For great patchwork/quilted fabric choices and for bags such as this, I’ve already done your homework and found some delicious fabric combinations, which you can see in this other bag pattern here.</p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<p>I have 5 sets of gorgeous quilting fabrics here for&#160; you to choose from:</p>

<p>A beautiful Back to School project!&#160; This girl backpack is quilted, has ribbons &amp; buttons, has contrast front cover, is covered with flowers ~ in one word: is cutter than a button. I love this sweet quilted backpack and just know that thousands of young girls would love their mom to make this for them.&#160; (And can imagine moms making 4 of these simultaneously as they want one for them selves, one for their best friends and then have some to give a way as presents later on in the year…) </p>
<p>This backpack seems a bit sturdier than the usual one with just a drawstring thanks to both the quilting and its construction. </p>
