Chinese New Year Greeting Card

Chinese New Year will be really early this year, January 23. To celebrate with your Chinese friends, I’ve designed you again a Chinese New Year card. As a gift.

This year will the year of the Water Dragon.

Meaning of the Chinese Dragon

The symbol of the mythical Chinese dragon stands for potency, auspicious power (particularly in relation to weather), strength, action (yang), and good luck. Unlike connotations in the West, the Chinese dragon is a benevolent creature.

Every Chinese year also carries one of the natural elements with it, and this year, it will be Water. Water offers a balanced communication and a temperance of the fire of the dragon, allowing the opinion of others to be accounted for, leading to better decisions and outcomes.

Beachy Bath Mittens

Another great contribution to your beach cottage: starfish, coral, seaweed and fish-shaped bath gloves. Aren’t they both lovely and fun?

Depending on the colors in your bathroom, use either pastel or brightly-colored hand towels and the templates below. There’s a fish, starfish and a coral shape.

My favorite bath mitten shape is the coral and I fancy using up a red IKEA wash cloth for this purpose. It’s also the best color match to my blue-white bathroom. As these great shapes make of course wonderful bath ‘toys’, choose whatever color will work to get them easily into the bathtub, so they’ll be clean and relaxed for bed. Needless to say that these make a great gift to go along with bath foam and other personal spa products…

How to Make Your Own Bath Mitten

Step by Step Instructions

1. Print and cut the template of your choice.
2. Pin your template onto your soft fabric terrycloth/towel material and cut, leaving a 1/2 ” seam.
Tip: to avoid having to make a seam at the entrance, align the hand opening with the edge of your towel. This way you can use the stitched seam that’s already there.
3. Cut the shape 2x. If your material is really thick, cut each piece separately.
4. Lay the pieces on top of eachother, inside out, and sew them together, leaving the bottom side open so your hand can go in it…
5. If your materials is frays, go over the edges with a zigzag stitch.
6. Flip the mitten right-side out.
7. Embellish (one side of the glove) as desired with a few beads or applique elements.

If you want to make a whole bunch of them to sell at the school’s fair or your community craft show, consider buying 45” Wide Terry Cloth Pink Fabric By The Yard. Great prices for good terry cloth.

Free Knitting Pattern Hermes Great Gatsby Sweater

Some days I want to be romantic, other days I wear something artsy, other days again, I go for goth (although not often) and then one Saturday, yes, once in a while, I want to be preppy. And I own all that I need to be just this. However,… this amazing Hermes tennis-themed pullover would make a great addition to my wardrobe. Way too nice to actually wear on the tennis courts, it is a really fun item to own: its V-neck Great Gatsby sweaters remind me of a fun time gone by (now I’m giving my age away).

So, I want to extend a very warm ‘thank you’ or ‘danke’ to this German magazine ‘Fur Sie’ (for YOU), that offers us a free pattern to make a sweater just like the Hermes in this picture, but of course, at a tiny fraction of the cost.

The Hermes designer Jean Paul Gaultier actually designed this sweater as part of its Spring 2010 collection. However, the way I go about making large clothing projects like this is that I better start several months ahead of time. So, now would be a great time to begin, as also the type of yarn I’ll need might even be on sale.

Btw. this would also make a great XMAS gift and you still have over a full month to knit it if you start soon.

I have a feeling that if you have some knitting experience (and really want to make this Great Gatsby sweater, you will actually be able to figure it out. If not, leave me a comment and I’ll see if I can help you. My German is a tat rusty but I used to be able to speak it.
