Beachy Bath Mittens

Another great contribution to your beach cottage: starfish, coral, seaweed and fish-shaped bath gloves. Aren’t they both lovely and fun?

Depending on the colors in your bathroom, use either pastel or brightly-colored hand towels and the templates below. There’s a fish, starfish and a coral shape.

My favorite bath mitten shape is the coral and I fancy using up a red IKEA wash cloth for this purpose. It’s also the best color match to my blue-white bathroom. As these great shapes make of course wonderful bath ‘toys’, choose whatever color will work to get them easily into the bathtub, so they’ll be clean and relaxed for bed. Needless to say that these make a great gift to go along with bath foam and other personal spa products…

How to Make Your Own Bath Mitten

Step by Step Instructions

1. Print and cut the template of your choice.
2. Pin your template onto your soft fabric terrycloth/towel material and cut, leaving a 1/2 ” seam.
Tip: to avoid having to make a seam at the entrance, align the hand opening with the edge of your towel. This way you can use the stitched seam that’s already there.
3. Cut the shape 2x. If your material is really thick, cut each piece separately.
4. Lay the pieces on top of eachother, inside out, and sew them together, leaving the bottom side open so your hand can go in it…
5. If your materials is frays, go over the edges with a zigzag stitch.
6. Flip the mitten right-side out.
7. Embellish (one side of the glove) as desired with a few beads or applique elements.

Cool Recycled Metal Fence

A fence like you’ve never seen before, have you?! You gotta go to Carrboro in NC to see this beauty. Artistic and practical.

This particular fence does not come with a manual, however, there are however plenty of YouTube tutorials on fence making from which to borrow the design ideas needed to pull this one off on your own.

Start collecting’ ‘stuff’ would be step #1.

DIY Fence Making Instructions

I thought to give you some tips and hints on how to make fences, however, these folks at the lumberyard really know best. Let them advice you.

Here are their hips and hints on how to make a really good fence – or rather, they are good step-by-step how-to instructions: 1. spacing the fence posts, 2. setting the fence posts, and 3. adding rails to the posts ~ exactly what you’ll need to make the fence above.

Not for beginners ~ sorry, but not that hard either.

Succulents Shine in Recycled Shoe

Great summer craft for kids: make your own succulent garden in that worn pair of shoes that has been the favorite for soooo long and that is just still too ‘precious’ to throw away. Have a pair of those, with soles all worn out and/or now cramping your toes? Perfect. Let’s recycle (upcycle) it!!

Materials Needed for this Garden Art Project

All you need next is an old plastic bag with which you’ll line the shoe so it will last a bit longer as your plant pot.

Next pour in a bit of soil and break of a few succulent florets from your moms, aunts or neighbors succulents and put them in the soil.

1/4 cup of water and your shoe garden is ready to go onto your bedroom’s window sill or somewhere on the porch.

Perfect Plant for Kids

Succulents like sun and won’t mind it if you forget to water them, .. for a while.

The pattern suggests Lion Brand Recycled Cotton. You might consider alternatives. Gauge worked well with worsted medium-weight yarn.

Plus: add lemonade and sugar if you don’t mind the extra calories, or add squashed lemons and sparking mineral water if you do.

What you’ll need: toilet rolls, red/white/blue decorative papers, scissors, glue … and candy

Best Fourth of July Summer Pie

YIELD: Makes 8 to 10 servings

COURSE: Desserts, Pies/Pastries

Ingredients

5 cups fresh sweet, dark cherries, rinsed and pitted, or frozen pitted cherries (see notes)

3 tablespoons lemon juice

1 1/2 cups fresh blueberries, rinsed and drained, or frozen blueberries

1 cup sugar

1/4 cup cornstarch

Flag pastry

2 teaspoons butter or margarine, cut into small pieces

Vanilla ice cream (optional)

Preparation

1. In a large bowl, mix cherries with 2 tablespoons lemon juice. In a smaller bowl, mix blueberries with remaining 1 tablespoon lemon juice. Combine sugar and cornstarch; gently stir 1 cup of the mixture into cherries and 1/4 cup into blueberries.

2. Spoon cherry mixture over 3/4 of the pastry in pan, leaving 1 quadrant free. Spoon blueberry mixture into unfilled area. Scatter butter evenly over fruit.

3. Top filling with stars and stripes as directed for flag pastry. Set pie in a foil-lined 13- by 17-inch baking pan.

4. Bake on the bottom rack of a 400° regular or convection oven until fruit is bubbling in the center and pastry is well browned, about 1 hour. If pastry edges brown too quickly (check after 40 minutes), cover loosely with foil.

5. Let pie cool on a rack at least 3 hours; let stand at room temperature up to 8 hours. Cut into wedges and serve with ice cream, if desired.
