I get a lot of artist opportunities in my mailbox, but only from time to time share them with you all on the blog. This is a unique opportunity to reside on a Haida North American reservation, to be inspired by this great and ancient culture and to contribute to the local community there with an inspired vision.

The Haida culture is known for its animal wood carvings (see below) as well as basket weaving, amongst other things.  Fancy sharing your love for art and life at a remote wilderness location with a Native American nation, that is usually not open to the general public…. Sounds really soulful to me!

Call to Artists – Residency Program in Gwaii Haanas
Gwaii Haanas and the Haida Gwaii Museum
Residency: 5 – 10 days (weather dependent) in June 2011
Deadline: Monday, April 11, 2011

Gwaii Haanas and the Haida Gwaii Museum are proud to partner in this new “artist residency” program that aims to connect people to Gwaii Haanas through art.

Three visual artists will spend 5 – 10 days (weather dependent) in June 2011 immersed in the natural and breathtaking “islands of beauty.” Selected artists will live in a remote field-camp setting in Gwaii Haanas, embarking on day-trips and camping out-trips. Of the three artists, one space is available for an individual not residing on Haida Gwaii.

Artists will undertake “research” by exploring, photographing, sketching, and writing about their surroundings. Artists provide their own personal gear, art supplies, and transportation to/from Skidegate, Haida Gwaii and commit to finishing two pieces of artwork for exhibition, one piece to be donated to the Haida Gwaii Museum.

A selection committee made up of Gwaii Haanas and Haida Gwaii Museum staff will review all submissions. Final selections will be based on the applicants’ experience and community engagement proposal, artist statement, originality of work, and relevancy to the Gwaii Haanas experience.

How to Apply

Prepare a clear, concise proposal outlining: what you would like to experience/accomplish, what ability and tolerance you have in a remote camping environment, what you could offer to the community (workshops/presentations requirements for off-island applicant only). An artist statement, 5-10 digital images, and an inventory list are also required. Each year, WorldPeace.org organizes an International Children Art Competition for Peace. The artwork is featured on the International Day for Peace, posters are made, etc.

The children’s artwork will be touring around the world as part of the International Peace Pals Art Exhibition.

Over the years, this peace exhibition has inspired the global hearts of youth and adults alike with the message of peace, May Peace Prevail On Earth.

The deadline for this year’s art competition is July 31.

This poster here is made by one of last year’s winners.

Did you see this fabulous bird pillow tutorial made by Bev from Flamingo Toes for us?  It’s a beautifully embellished pillow tutorial with lots of techniques and tips to get the ‘just so’ detail.

Now that Vancouver has been so in the news lately for the Olympics, I thought  to share with you another art opportunity that is open to us all. This Call for Interests is at one of Canada’s most beautiful places, Banff. In winter it is like Vail, the ultimate sky resort. In summer, it transforms into an artistic haven.   You’ll see when you get there. Some well-known artists have in fact studied there.

Here are the details for this exciting Art Residency.

London-based painter Silke Otto-Knapp will lead participants into the landscape around Banff National Park. On arrival at various scenic locations the group will ready themselves, like generations of artists before them and begin to make art. What they see will be shaped by the sun’s position and the weather. Each artist will be reminded of the time contract as the light changes and fades to darkness.

One of the reasons I love Chinese New Year, is that I get to dillydally with my New Year resolutions for a month. I try them out before committing. This year’s no different & commit to this New Year …
..Resolution: My new year resolution is to act upon great ideas, and to complete all worthwhile craft projects that I’ve already started. And I have tons of work in process (WIP craft).

The below list of ‘101 Top Free & Green Craft Tutorials’ serves as my basis for many of these planned / WIP craft projects. I’ll make my own version based on them. And I will promise not to buy any Amy Butler fabric, as that’s kind of cheating: pretty much everything looks better in her fabric. Even mundane little string bags….. It’s kind of like she’s doing the craft for us.

No, instead, I’ll really, really try to recycle.

Many of the free craft tutorials below upcycle previously-used materials. Often the tutorials imply using new materials, but they would often look just as good, if not better, when using recyclables.  Many of the projects here could be created using recyclable materials, sometimes easily, sometimes not.  The ‘U’  marks in the craft tutorial list below indicate that these tutorials are written with ‘upcycling, refashioning & recycling used materials’ in mind. The other craft projects here could be made using recycled materials, if you so wish.

The Real Soap Company, or rather Cindy at Cottage Instinct (i.e.e the brain behind this hand-made soap) is having a give- away… TODAY!!!

Better hop over right away before she wakes up, as she’ll be drawing the winner when she gets out of bed…. probably.

Anyhow, as I just moved into a new home and shed all the ‘old stuff’, I am actually in need of some new great-quality soap, so I had a look at hers, and like them. Very much. They look very good and professionally made.

Personally I like my soaps to be made with genuine essential oils as these are both good for you and they smell good.

Anyhow Cindy’s offering either 3 of handmade bars of soap in our choice of scents, OR 2 mini stacks with 6 scents in total.

Almost all are scented with essential oil blends. All are made from scratch with either goat’s milk or coconut milk. Some have botanicals just for kicks.

Well, I want the ‘Mandarin Neroli’-scent. Doesn’t that sound fabulously uplifting? There are some other good essential oil-based scents that I hope I’ll win as well.

I like bags and if I see any opportunity to design a bag, well, I’m on it. Today I’m sharing an opportunity with you to not only design a bag, but also to get some free publicity from winning a contest. What fun.

For the first time ever, City of Craft is inviting craft enthusiasts to submit imagery for this year’s Swag Bags. City of Craft is the craft fair organization in Toronto, Canada.

The City of Craft’s Swag Bags are handed out to the first lucky 100 attendees and they pack them full of fantastic goodies from local and international craft artists and indie publications. People line up before they open our doors in the freezing cold to receive them (it’s always cold in Canada, remember…), so they want to give them ‘something special’ this year to take home.

If your design is chosen, you will be rewarded handsomely with

A. crafty prizes (always wonderful to get); and

B. fame via their website (City of Craft is a PR4, so good.), blog (at blogspot, so ‘blah’ when it comes to ‘link love’ value.) & other press outlets (can be good).

Cotton totes will be printed with your design on the front and are printed with one colour.

Designs should be no more than 8.5 by 11 inches at 300 dpi. They accept jpegs and pdfs. If you aren’t sure what sort of line thickness is needed for silk-screening or you have any other questions just send them an email.

• appears to duplicate any other submitted Entries;
• defames, misrepresents or contains disparaging remarks about other people or companies;
• contains trademarks, logos, or trade dress (such as distinctive packaging or building exteriors/interiors) owned by others (except that of Cost Plus World Market), without permission;
• contains any personal identification, such as license plate numbers, personal names, e-mail addresses or street addresses;
• contains copyrighted materials owned by others (including photographs, sculptures, paintings, and other works of art, or images published on or in websites, television, movies or other media), without permission;
• contains materials embodying the names, likenesses, or other indicia identifying any person, including, without limitation, celebrities and/or other public or private figures, living or dead, without permission;
• contains look-alikes of celebrities or other public or private figures, living or dead;
• communicates messages or images inconsistent with the positive images and/or good will to which Sponsor wishes to associate; and/or
• violates any law.

THE LOGO: A MUST. Entry must contain the World Market logo, be the original work of the entrant, may not have been previously published, may not have won previous awards, and must not infringe upon the copyrights, trademarks, rights of privacy, publicity or other intellectual property or other rights of any person or entity.

JUDGING: All eligible Entries received by Sponsor will be judged by a panel of qualified judges based equally on the following criteria: Originality, Creativity and Representation of the World Market brand and feel. The Entry with the highest score will be deemed the potential Grand Prize winner.

WINNER NOTIFICATION: Judges’ and Sponsor’s decisions are final and binding on all matters relating to this Contest. Potential winner will be notified by telephone, mail and/or email and will be required to complete an Affidavit of Eligibility, Liability and Publicity Release (unless prohibited by law) and any other documents required by Sponsor, which must be returned within 7 days of date appearing on prize notification.

Prize (1): A $1,000 World Market gift card and 25 tote bags with winner’s design on it. Winner’s tote bag design may also be distributed at select World Market locations.
Approximate Retail Value ("ARV") is $1,125.00. Tote bag design manufactured may vary in some respects from actual design submitted in Entry. Nature of reproduction and distribution, quantities, channels and methods will be at Sponsor’s sole discretion. Winner will receive no additional compensation or royalty and no approval will be required with respect to the design and distribution of the design on the tote bags.
